Hello friends,
Hope you have been having great summer! I usually don’t like to flood your inbox with too many posts but happy to share this big one with a bunch of updates.
First on the list is this artist talk I’m giving this week at Urban Glass.
Goldie Poblador - Fertility Flowers in conversation
Fertility Flowers is an interactive installation of glass, scent and video by Goldie Poblador that interrogates the origins and myths of several flowers native to her home country, the Philippines. In mythology across cultures, women’s bodies are transformed into plants as punishment for acting on their desires. Poblador turns this folklore on its head to imagine the Filipina prying agency from her oppressors.
In a special artist talk moderated by the artist’s close collaborator Apa Agbayani, Poblador unravels the process of the show’s creation, its narrative underpinnings and connections to the diasporic Filipino experience.
Fertility Flowers in conversation happens on August 24, Wednesday from 5:00 to 6:00 PM at UrbanGlass.
For those of you who can’t make it, some pictures are now up on my website.
You might recognize the name of this show from a previous piece I made for 601artspace last summer. Which brings me to the second thing I wanted to share.
Thanks to a residency I did last May at the Oakspring Garden Foundation I was able to conduct research in the library and gardens of Bunny Mellon which included rare books dating back to the 14th century. Three main pieces on display at Urban Glass this month were created during this time and are inspired by several books from the library at OSGF.
As subscribers to this newsletter I am happy to share these behind the scenes photos from that time.
Some of these pieces are included in Fertility Flowers at Urban Glass.
Last thing I wanted to share is that this is the last week to visit my collaboration with Vans in Williamsburg.
Well thats it for now!
Hope you have a great rest of the summer.
All the best,
Goldie
